Recovering Lost Heritage

Foraging for mushrooms and reframing the forest in Nicaragua.

Travel to Nicaragua with mycologist Fulvio Castillo, who has been studying his country’s unique mushroom landscape for thirty years. Much indigenous knowledge of mushrooms has been lost since Spanish colonization, and he is on a mission to restore this cultural heritage and rescue local species found exclusively in Nicaraguan forests.

The country is uniquely situated for diverse mushroom growth, and he hopes to reframe the forest as a productive space of sustainable growth and mushroom culture, rather than its common use for lumber and agricultural activities. Thanks to his mushroom tours, all generations can learn about foraging and fostering these critical denizens of the forest.
